My undergraduate honours research is focused on determining the relationship between the eastern North Pacific Grey Whale (Eschrichtius robustus) population and their smaller Pacific Costal Feeding Group (PCFG) using mitochondrial DNA and principal component analysis. Differences in the mitochondrial DNA between the two groups will indicate that they may need to be treated as separate management units. This research will help agencies develop conservation efforts tailored to each group and maintain population numbers for the Pacific Costal Feeding Group. After graduating, I hope to continue working with marine mammals in a conservation setting and pursue a Master’s degree.
